About LASS

LASS, Lancaster Animal Shelter Supporters of South Carolina, is a nonprofit organization providing volunteer support and funding for homeless animals at the Lancaster County Animal Shelter. For over seven years, LASS has raised funds for animal transport to out-of-state rescues, medical care, supplies, and much-needed equipment for the Lancaster County Animal Shelter. By funding these services, the shelter animals are healthier, happier, and more adoptable. Each animal's adoption makes room for another homeless pet to have a safe place to rest until they can be adopted, too.

LASS is proud to organize volunteers to assist the shelter staff in exercising the animals, cleaning cat and dog areas, and providing love and comfort to the animals who are often stressed in the shelter environment. Getting animals out of their runs or cages for playtime and exercise helps relieve their tensions and work off energy. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the volunteer opportunities are on-hold for the time being.

LASS also provides funding for affordable spaying and neutering and assistance to adopters of heart worm-positive dogs to offset the cost of treatment. These programs reduce shelter overcrowding and help get more animals adopted who might otherwise spend their entire lives in the shelter.

While 2020 has proven to be a difficult year, LASS is so proud to have helped in outfitting the much-needed new Lancaster County Animal Shelter which opened in early November, 2020. While the building construction was funded by tax-payers, LASS has donated a significant amount for items not included in the budget such as flooring in the lobby and office space and assistance with items needed to complete the surgical suite. LASS President, Arlene McCarthy, can be seen in the photo below giving her remarks at the shelter grand-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 5th.

LASS is funded through corporate sponsorships and donations from our community of fellow animal-lovers. Please consider a donation to LASS so that we may continue to provide these vital services that improve the lives of the many homeless animals in our area. As LASS is a South Carolina 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations are tax-deductible.
